Study of the porous flexible manifold as a stratification improvement device in solar thermal storage tanks

Lab: Renewable Energy Lab, K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering (KJSCE)

Guide: Prof. Dr. Atul G. Bhave, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, KJSCE

Because of the unsteady characteristics of solar radiation, thermal storage becomes very essential in long-term operation of heating load. Thermal stratification offers two main benefits to solar hot water storage system operation. First, maintenance of thermal stratification is necessary to ensure that the usefulness of collected energy is not degraded. Second, thermal stratification increases solar collector performance. One of the most effective and simplest methods to maintain thermal stratification of water storage tanks is the use of a porous flexible manifold as it requires least modifications in the storage tank. This project involves:

  • Study of different methods to maintain and improve the thermal stratification in the storage tank of a solar thermosyphon water heating system.

  • Improved the existing experimental setup with improved alignment of temperature sensors and proper sealing of the flat plate collector to reduce heat loss.

  • Systematic accumulation of experimental data to study and compare thermal stratification in the storage tank with and without stratification enhancing manifold. (porous flexible manifold).

  • Analysis of flat plate solar collector.

Performance Analysis of Lanstove Janata Cooker Jacket

Lanstove Janata Cooker Jacket

Lab: Energy Lab, Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), Phaltan

Janata cooker is used for cooking using Lanstove. The cooker is a stainless steel container which is provided with three pots of stainless steel as in an ordinary pressure cooker. The cooker is covered with an insulation jacket to prevent heat loss to the surrounding environment. Thermal performance of insulation jacket was studied with the help of experiments conducted.

Solar Water Purification System

Solar Water Purification System

Lab: Energy Lab, Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), Phaltan

Solar Water Sterilizer is a reliable technique of clean drinking water - water is filtered with four layered cotton sari cloth and heated in a evacuated tubular collectors.

  • Performance analysis, fabrication and costing of the system.

  • Prepared business model canvas for possible business opportunity of selling solar water purifiers.

  • Designed user manual of the system.

  • Prepared project plan for installing solar water purifier in school and creating awareness among school students about solar energy & importance of saving water.

Evaluation of Thakkar Bappa Yojana in Palghar, Maharashtra

Lab: TDSC, CTARA, IIT Bombay

Thakkar Bappa Yojana or Thakkar Bappa Integrated Tribal Habitation Improvement Scheme is a program of the Tribal Development Department, Government of Maharashtra started in 2004-05 for integrated development of tribal habitations in the state. My role:

  • Building forms for collection of field data (KoBoToolBox)

  • Travelling to different villages in Palghar district and assessment of structures executed under Thakar Bappa Yojana

  • Writing village reports

Solar PV based drinking water supply systems: Case studies from Jawhar and Mokhada

Lab: TDSC, CTARA, IIT Bombay

Mokhada taluka acquires adequate rainfall but due to hilly terrain and lack of water recharge systems, several habitations of the recharge systems, several habitations of the region experience water scarcity leading to high degree of drinking water stress after monsoon. Water supply system must provide sufficient quantity of quality water with reliable access throughout the year. Availability, quality and accessibility are the important dimensions for water security. Accessibility is important factor as it affects the health of women who fetch water from long distance. Accessibility is not only measured in terms of distance but also the condition and slope of the road. Pumping drinking water near habitation can reduce accessibility stress. Pumping and transporting water from source to end user requires energy. For remote villages far from power grid or where grid power is not available and good solar condition exists, solar powered pumping is good solution.

To get basic idea about the existing solar powered drinking water pumping systems, field visits were made to three solar powered drinking water pumping systems installed in Jawhar and Mokhada region.

Status assessment of habitation in Pathardi village, Palghar

Lab: TDSC, CTARA, IIT Bombay

Part of "Status assessment and planning for a reduction in water stress: A case study of Pathardi village of Mokhada Taluka".

This report is an initiative to understand issues related to drinking water leading to water stresses and further give interventions for the reduction in stress. The study area is Pathardi village of Mokhada taluka of Palghar District of Maharashtra. The project aims to increase water availability for both the drinking and livelihood purposes using best practices suitable for the local conditions and focusing on regional planning.
